Below that is the name of the composer, written as ‘Majnun Salim Akbar’, or the enamoured Salim, son of Akbar. Although the available historical facts about the character as well as the mausoleum are vague and confusing, the size and the grandeur of the burial chamber and the presence of a grave inside it vividly suggest that the deceased person was of great significance. The French historian Alain Desoulires, an expert on the history of Urdu literature, in his research paper ‘Historical Fiction and Style: The Case of Anarkali’ has traced the origin of Anarkali’s story to the accounts of different 17th century English travelers to Lahore such as William Finch, Edward Terry and Bishop Herbert. The success of Mughal-e-Azam, spawned a whole series of regional language version of this classic. A couplet by Jahangir written on the grave in Persian reads, “If I could behold my beloved only once, I would remain thankful to Allah till doomsday”. Following this, in the second edition, Imtiaz Ali Taj took the help of two local Lahore historians named Ghulam Abbad and Chirag Hassan, to add some embellishments and soon the lines between historical fact and fiction began to get blurred. The Mughal prince Salim falling for a courtesan Anarkali is the stuff that legends are made of. Hurling threats at political leaders and vowing to put more pressure on them reeks of a personal vendetta. Akbar’s inordinate love for her made his other two ladies jealous and hostile towards Anarkali. There is no mention about her in the works of Akbar’s friend and biographer Abul Fazl who wrote the Akbarnama. This clearly infers a passionate affair between Saleem and Anarkali. Other western visitors, who arrived here during the next two centuries, including Haggle, Prince and Mason, only mentioned the charming gardens and fascinating architecture of the tomb, but nothing about the person buried in the grave or the incident of Anarkali. These romances had a common theme in which a beautiful heroine from a humble background falls in love with a man from a wealthy background, and the romance ends in a tragedy. In his compilation, titled Tareekh-i-Lahore (1897), Kanhaya Laal writes that Nadira was a beautiful concubine in the court of Akbar and was endowed with the name Anarkali on the basis of her pink complexion and ravishing beauty. In it, he is extremely candid about his feelings and gives a fairly accurate account of his life and happenings. But what took a local Lahore city tale based on hearsay to nationwide fame, was the release of a 1922 drama named Anarkali, written by a local playwright named Imtiaz Ali Taj. History.
