This is one of the areas, as you might have guessed, responsible for vision. Does that sound impossible? Overall, the status of blindsight is unclear. Sahraie et al. Taylor (1997) has modeled a two-stage neural network that accounts for blindsight and neglect which is very similar conceptually to previously described conscious/automatic processing models, and has proposed a third stage to this model (the ACTION net) roughly corresponding to those cortical areas involved in executive functioning, planning, reasoning, and working memory (Brodmann areas 46 and 9). Whereas standard VRT significantly improved stimulus detection by 2.9%, eVRT patients improved by 5.8%, doubling the extent of vision restoration. Repeated stimulation inside the blind visual field (and not only at the border zone, as in VRT) resulted in improvements deep in the field defect. This task allows the participant the freedom to say ‘blank’ or ‘no stimulus’ on every trial presentation if they wish to do so. The need to stimulate the border region in early training phases makes it difficult to clearly separate an “alternative pathway” (blindsight)-training from the classic vision-restoration training. Just as in saccadic eye-movement training, it is difficult to fully avoid ARV stimulation when presenting visual stimuli to patients with visual field defects in blindsight paradigms.
