Doug Cockle, perfectly cast as the gruff, gravelly Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series, sounds out of place here; while the acting is fine, his throaty whispers seem to go too much against the grain of the character. Through occasional playable flashback scenes, you’ll learn some history about the game’s supporting cast, like Richard’s wife Tracy, and Lydia, the woman he’s having an affair with. Since there are very few choices that seem to have real weight, the game doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve missed out just because you didn’t make a certain choice.
State of Mind ist interessant, spannend und regt zum Nachdenken an. Indeed, an absolutely gut wrenching decision must be made at the end of the game – and it’s one that echoes the notion that though State of Mind deals with massively complex transhumanism themes and concepts, the stakes are rarely higher than that of the single individual, or certainly, the love and companionship one feels from those who are closest to us. Moreover, it’s simply refreshing to see a games developer treat these deep and sophisticated topics with the sort of well considered nuance and consideration that they have long deserved. Richard becomes involved with Breakpoint, an underground resistance movement, though I found determining the group’s intentions or how Richard’s association with them furthered the hunt for his wife to be more trouble than it was worth. Richard Nolan ist jedoch nicht der einzige Charakter, den ihr kennen lernt und steuert. State of Mind is a beautifully crafted cyberpunk game, with an immersive and interesting world that’s second to none, but it ultimately fails at doing cyberpunk fiction well.
